About the project

Oír Para Crecer (OPC) is a non-profit association based in Lima dedicated to promoting hearing health in children and adults through prevention, diagnosis, and timely treatment. Their goal is to achieve universal inclusion of people with hearing loss in society. HTWF has been supporting the interdisciplinary team of seven permanent staff members and three volunteers since 2016. OPC aims to scale access to hearing care for the low-income population of Peru and further strengthen the quality and sustainability of its services. 

The project provides consistent services across the entire care continuum (screenings, diagnostics, fitting, auditory habilitation, family support, capacity building for local teams). The local team focuses on capacity and collaboration building to gradually extend their services from the capital of Lima to the provinces to reach a higher number of children in need in more rural areas. They also use data collection methods to systematically advocate for the importance of integrating hearing health care services within the public system.

Impact and achievements

To mitigate the impact of Covid-19-related school closures, OPC developed a screening questionnaire and interviewed parents when they came to pick up food baskets provided by another organization. With the support of our Foundation, the acquisition of advanced screening equipment will enable the team to advance the diagnostic process for children and to continue their care for infants.

Moreover, the project successfully expanded its outreach to interior regions of Peru through collaborations with audiological centers. The local team continued to follow up with these patients remotely. In addition, they started offering psychological care services to patients and their families.
